Hi
Welcome to term 2! I sent home a brief newsletter earlier in the week, and I wanted to post the information here, so that you can refer back to it.
Uniform
The children are looking great in their winter uniforms! If they would like to bring their running shoes for fitness and lunch time they are welcome, however they do need to wear their correct school shoes during class time and to and from school.
Shared Lunch!
Due to the cross country postponement we didn’t have our shared lunch last term. We would like to have it this Thursday, at 12:30. The children are asked to bring a plate for this.
Spelling
Using the spelling list that they were given last term, the children need to work through the words at their own pace, making sure that they understand their focus spelling rule. We will have a full test twice a term, and individuals will get the chance to test their knowledge of their rule as the need arises. If you believe that your child has mastered the rule that they are working through, please let me know.
We will be having a test on all rules next week.
Basic Facts
We will be having a full basic facts test this Friday.
:)

Week 8 Term 1
Hi there
I can't believe how quickly this term is flying by. The children have had a busy term, with many opportunities both in and out of the classroom. One such outdoor opportunity is the school cross country, coming up in week 10. I am encouraging the children to practise for the cross country in their free time, in support of the class fitness and practice sessions that are occurring daily.
Tomorrow Cat Kincaid, Paulette Newton and I are working with a group of children who are interested in becoming Jump Jam leaders in the school for this year. I was delighted with the number of children from room 9 who expressed an interest in this. The children who are selected will have lunch time practices, and will help to lead Jump Jam across the school, as a part of the fitness programme. There is also the possibility of competing in the Christchurch Jump Jam competition later in the year.
In the class we have been working hard on developing time management skills, and the children have made excellent progress in this. They are enjoying increasing opportunities to manage their own time, and they are working hard at completing tasks by the due date.
In our inquiry we are looking at the definition of a hero, and at the qualities that a hero must possess. Once this is completed the children will select a person, who has been labeled a hero, to study, to ascertain whether they believe this person is indeed a hero. I anticipate this research being completed by the end of the term, which will see the children ready to begin to look at their own impact on the world around them early in the second term.
Have a fantastic week!

Google Apps
Hi there
The children in Room 9 are trialling a new system called Google Apps.
Please ensure that if your child wants to use the system at home or outside of school, that they are supervised and that use is in line with our Digital Safety Agreement.
We are excited about this system as it will open up many learning opportunities for the children.

Home from Camp!
Hi there
I hope you have all had an enjoyable week, we certainly made the most of our time away on camp! The children were all very well behaved - they were respectful to the parents and instructors, and they gave every activity a go. I was very impressed with the level of team work and encouragement from the children, they supported people who were finding activities difficult, along with the people who pushed their limits and tried the very challenging options. We will be posting some reflections about camp on our blog (room9fos.blogspot.com), and we will post photos on both blogs. Some of the children may take some of the video footage and create a movie about camp, which we can then upload to youtube.
I really enjoyed camp this year, it was fantastic to get to know the children in a different environment, and to see how they responded to challenging activities. Thank you so much to all of the parents who came along, it was fantastic to work with such an enthusiastic and dedicated group of people!

Camp Week!
Hi there
It's only 3 more sleeps until Rooms 9 and 22 head off to camp, and I for one am very excited! We have some exciting and challenging activities planned, and the children are sure to have a great time. We have sent home most of the information that you need, with another letter to follow tomorrow, as well as an information letter for parent helpers. If you have offered transport, but are not coming along on the camp we are not desperate for extra seats, so while you are welcome to take a car, and check out the camp site with your child, we do have enough transport with the parents who will be staying. Please let me know if you plan on coming along regardless.
The camp gear list went home last week, please let me know if you did not receive this.
I'm off to school now, to do some of the final jobs before we go - it is shaping up to be a fantastic trip away!

Meet the Teacher
Hi there.
Thank you to all of the people who came along to meet the teacher last night. I enjoyed seeing so many of you there, and I appreciated the thoughtful questions that were asked. If you forgot to take either of the handouts (the numeracy booklet or the 'information about your child' form) and you'd like me to send them home for you, please let me know. If you were unable to come, and would like a copy of the power point for the evening (or if you were there and are wildly interested in the slides that wouldn't play!!!) let me know and I can send them home too.

Camp again!
Hi there
Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to help on our camp this year. As we had so many volunteers we had to ballot for places. The parents who have been chosen have been listed on today's newsletter. We really do appreciate all of the offers of support, and we hope that if you were unsuccessful this time you may be able to come along on another trip later in the year.

Swimming and other things...
Hi
It's hard to believe we are into week 3 already, the past two weeks have flown by, and I've really enjoyed getting to know the children and finding out about their strengths and goals. I have particularly enjoyed seeing how thoughtful they are, we have a class of children who think about others and offer deep responses to questions and discussions.
It has been disappointing to have had to postpone the swimming sports these past few days, and we are very hopeful that we will be able to go ahead with them tomorrow. The temperature of the pool will be very cold after the recent weather, so the children may like to bring an extra towel if they are competing in more than one race. They will definitely need their polarfleece during their waiting times.
I am really looking forward to seeing you at Meet the Teacher on Wednesday night,. If you are unable to make it please feel free to drop into the class after school some time, to chat about how the class programme works, alternatively I can give you a copy of the information that I plan to present on Wednesday.
Have a great week!

Swimming Sports
Hi there
The school swimming sports has been postponed, so will not be held tomorrow as previously advertised. We are hoping to hold the sports on Friday, although the weather forecast isn't great for then either. It seems most likely that the swimming sports will be held next Monday, the 16th of February.
Due to this change lunch orders will be available tomorrow.

Camp!
Last Thursday the children were given their first notice regarding camp. If your child did not receive a notice for any reason, there are spares on the notice board in the class room. If you would like to help with camp in any capacity, please return the form provided by Tuesday 10th February.
The camp is shaping up to be an exciting and challenging event for the children - I can't wait!

Room 9 Newsletter
3 February 2009
Hi, and welcome to a new year, and the first term in Room 9 at Fendalton School. I do hope that you have had a chance to relax with family and friends over the summer break.
As you may be aware, this is my second year at Fendalton School. Prior to coming to Fendalton I spent 7 years teaching in both the junior and senior areas of Southbridge School, a small school just south of Leeston. I enjoy teaching at all levels of primary school, with each year having its own special features. I particularly enjoy both the challenges and rewards of teaching years 5 and 6, so when I was offered the position of Senior Team Leader near the end of last year I jumped at the chance to move up.
This year I plan to use a blog as a means of communicating with parents, so that I am able to add notes regularly, including links to other sites of interest. School and team notices will still be sent home with the children, as will class newsletters. The address for this blog is http://fosroom9news.blogspot.com/
I value the essential role you play as a parent / caregiver in the educational
development of your child. Your support of what we do in the classroom is vital for learning to be reinforced. If you would like to discuss anything with me, at anytime, please know that you are always welcome. If you need time for an uninterrupted discussion then it is wise to make an appointment. I can be contacted by email, carolyn.gregg@fendalton.school.nz. My telephone extension is 826.
I look forward to a happy and productive year in Room 9.
Kind regards
Carolyn Gregg

Welcome
Hi there
Welcome to the Room 9 blog for 2009. There will be 2 blogs for our class this year, one for the children to write in and contribute to, and one for me to use as a way of sending messages home. You are welcome to make comments on the posts of either of these blogs.
